AI Visibility Scores Across Shopify Stores: What the Data Shows

Every Shopify store we audit gets a GEO score — a measure of how citable each product listing is to AI engines. After auditing products across dozens of merchants, several patterns emerge clearly. Here's what we find, and what it means for your store.

How We Score AI Visibility

Upplyst's audit engine evaluates each product page across four dimensions, each scored 0–25 for a total possible score of 100:

Attribute completeness

/25 pts

Is product type filled in? Tags? Materials? Dimensions? Compatibility notes?

Factual density

/25 pts

Does the description contain specific, verifiable claims — or only marketing language?

FAQ coverage

/25 pts

Are common customer questions answered directly on the page?

Structured data

/25 pts

Is FAQPage or Product schema present and valid?

Most stores arrive with scores in the 20–40 range. A well-optimized product page consistently scores 75 or above.

Typical score ranges

0–30PoorMissing most attributes, no FAQ, no structured data
31–55FairSome attributes filled, sparse descriptions, no FAQ schema
56–74GoodReasonable specs, partial FAQ, may have schema
75–100StrongComplete attributes, FAQ section, schema present and valid

What We Consistently Find

Most product descriptions are marketing copy, not specifications

The most common pattern across all store types is a product description written as ad copy: "Elevate your everyday with our premium collection. Crafted for those who demand quality." This is invisible to AI engines. AI models cannot cite "quality" — they can cite "8oz 100% cotton, pre-washed for minimal shrink."

Rewriting to specifications is the single highest-impact GEO change most stores can make. The factual density dimension is where the most points are being left on the table.

FAQ sections are rare. FAQ schema is rarer.

Fewer than one in ten Shopify stores we've reviewed has any FAQ section on their product pages. Fewer than one in twenty has FAQPage schema markup.

This is a significant gap given how often AI shopping queries map directly to customer FAQ questions: "does this tent fit two people," "is this dishwasher safe," "will this work with my iPad Pro." Each of those is a potential citation — if the answer exists in your FAQ schema.

Product type and tags are frequently empty

Shopify's product type and tags fields — which AI engines use to classify and compare products — are left empty or minimally filled on the majority of stores. This affects AI engines' ability to surface your product in category-level recommendations ("what are the best natural candles?").

Filling in accurate product types and descriptive tags is a quick, low-effort change with measurable impact on AI classification accuracy.

Where Stores Score Well

The exception to the pattern above is technical products with spec-driven purchase decisions — electronics, outdoor gear, tools, health supplements. Sellers in these categories often already provide detailed specifications because customers demand them before buying. Those pages typically arrive at 45–60 out of 100 before any GEO-specific work.

Fashion and lifestyle products tend to score lowest (15–35) because their category culture strongly favors aspirational copy over specification. Paradoxically, these stores have the most to gain from GEO optimization — competitors are equally underoptimized, and the gap between what they currently provide and what AI engines need is large.

The FAQ Gap Is the Biggest Opportunity

Across all categories, the FAQ dimension has the most room for improvement. AI shopping queries are structurally questions. A store with FAQ sections on every product page consistently outperforms competitors on AI citation rate — even with only the top 3–5 questions answered per product.

The questions don't need to be elaborate. For a cast iron skillet: "Is this pre-seasoned?" "What cooktops is it compatible with?" "What's the weight?" "Is it oven safe?" Each answer is a potential AI citation when a user asks exactly that question.

The dogfooding principle

Every page on upplyst.io — including this blog post — is optimized with FAQ schema and factual content following the same principles we apply to merchant product pages. The structured data on this page is what tells AI engines that Upplyst is an authority on GEO for Shopify.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good AI visibility score for a Shopify product?

Scores above 75 represent well-optimized products that are strong candidates for AI citation. Most unoptimized products score between 20 and 45. A score below 30 typically indicates missing attributes, no FAQ content, and no structured data.

Which product categories score highest in AI visibility audits?

Technical and specification-driven categories — electronics, outdoor gear, tools, health supplements — typically score higher because their sellers already provide detailed specs. Fashion, lifestyle, and home décor tend to score lower due to a stronger marketing-copy culture in those categories.

How long does it take to improve a product's AI visibility score?

With Upplyst's automated rewrite and schema injection, a single product can go from a low score to 75+ in minutes. Across a full catalog, the primary constraint is reviewing and applying rewrites at scale.

Does a higher AI visibility score guarantee more AI referrals?

Not guarantee, but it significantly improves the probability. AI citation is competitive — if your product page has higher factual density, FAQ coverage, and structured data than competitors in your category, you're more likely to be cited when the query matches your product.

Can I audit my store before committing to Upplyst?
